BOULDER - Students from Boulder High School are submitting photos this week to a contest on resilience. They are using pictures taken from a photography trip to Cuba in March.
"I thought it was crazy that I got to go to this place that like not many people could go to," Gwen Lohmann, Boulder High School senior, said.
Lohmann was part of a group of 15 students from Boulder High School who went with teacher Dave Blessing to different cities and towns on the island nation. Blessing applied for a visa after the embargo rules were recently changed.
"They allow humanitarian aid and school groups on educational purposes," Blessing said. "I still have a hard time believing we were able to pull it off."
Blessing's son, Tyler, also went. He is in his father's class.
"I thought I was going to be like the only American there, People wouldn't believe I was able to go to Cuba," Tyler Blessing said. "Just a ridiculous opportunity, it would only be a once-in-a-lifetime thing."
The Boulder Valley School District is running a photography contest on resilience. Maya Wilson, who just graduated from Boulder High School, says all they saw in Cuba were examples of resilience.
"The most striking thing was definitely how happy the people were even though you can see that they were struggling," Wilson said.
Lohmann says she was amazed how many people drove classic cars and maintained them for so many years.
"You're like super impressed by all the cars and you're like whoa, I just literally time-traveled back," Lohmann said.
Blessing says what's more important than the pictures are the life lessons learned by his students.
"It's a great combination for the kids to be able to express themselves artistically while they're going through something that's really an emotional thing for them," Blessing said.
Each student had to raise more than $3,000 to go on the nine-day trip. The Cuban government provided a full-time guide, but they did have restrictions on what they could take pictures of. Pictures of police and certain buildings were not allowed.
Lohmann says this experience has had a profound effect on her.
"I'm just grateful for that trip cause it really just like changed my whole outlook on everything," Lohmann said.

BOULDER BEETLE PROJECT!
Jamestown artist, Emma Hardy teamed up with the National Art Honor Society from Boulder High School to put on an art performance.
Emma Hardy was born in Lincolnshire, England where she later earned a BA in Sculpture at the Wimbledon School of Art in London. Hardy is a practicing artist employing mixed medium from paper to bronze. Emma has shown large installations of her work nationally.
Hardy’s current project is taking to the streets. The Boulder Beetles, funded by the City of Boulder, are five larger-than-life bug costumes, each taking on the culture and personality of Boulder’s sister cities; Dushanbe, Tajikistan; Kisumu, Kenya; Jalapa, Nicaragua; and Boulder, Colorado. Each beetle is unique, characterizing each city, but like the cities themselves, are all connected. Boulder High student artists helped Hardy with her project as their community project for the Boulder High School National Art Honor Society. Groups of students worked together to create the silk underwings for the various beetles, capturing certain aspects of that city or culture.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Valentine Fagan, 17-year-old junior at Boulder High School
In 2015, Valentine joined the Walking Tree conservation program. This experience took Val to Costa Rica to learn about and help protect sea turtles. She would patrol the beach at night and look for eggs that needed to be moved and hidden from poachers. After moving the eggs to the hatchery, they would be reburied in a safe, protected area that was guarded. This experience taught Val that there are two sides to every story. Conservation isn’t black and white. She learned that poachers have a cultural history of why they do what they do.
Why did you join the Walking Tree program?
I joined the Walking Tree Conservation program because of a class I took last year. I took AP environmental science, and it completely changed the way I view our world. I gained a new desire to help preserve our fragile ecosystems and species, hence the turtle conservation.
What was the trip to Costa Rica like?
My trip was beautiful and educational. We got to do lots of eco-tourism as well as cultural tourism. Our time on the island with the conservationist was incredible, as we were really on the forefront of this pressing issue.
What did you learn from the experience?
I learned a lot more about the fragile social structure surrounding conservation. I also gained a new love of sea turtles and conservation.
What do you like about Boulder High?
At Boulder High, the teachers and faculty genuinely care about us. Unlike my old school, teachers are really concerned with our well being and our success, instead of just showing up and teaching because they had to.
Anything you would change about high school?
The social pressures surrounding high school friendships and interpersonal relationships adds an insurmountable amount of stress to everything we already deal with. I wish it was easier to focus all my energy on schoolwork instead of trying to fight off the distractions.
What’s your favorite subject?
My favorite subject is math, but my favorite class is definitely pottery.
What’s your favorite movie?
“Amelie”
What’s your dream job?
To be the creative editor of a fashion magazine.

THE BOULDER HIGH SCHOOL INAGURAL NAHS, 2015-16
The inaugural NAHS chapter at Boulder High School was launched this fall with a senior only group of nineteen members: Maya Caulfield, Kaya Tone, Seani Anderson, Maddie Werner, Avery Banik, Amanda Worthy, Katya Lien, Emily Hanson, Taylor Coil, Caroline Bertini, Meg Houlihan, Blythe Feeney, Asher Blackburn, Anna Daly, Sophie Gabriel. Virginia Schick is the faculty sponsor. Our NAHS chapter serves to honor students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Artistry, Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.
During the first meeting we filled out forms, voted for officers, discussed a NAHS/BHS t-shirt, secret handshake and word-smythed a motto. We are bringing designs to vote on for our t-shirt to our next meeting. We also brainstormed our philanthropic art project for the spring. Ideas are to paint a mural on a bike path underpass or in an ugly alley around Boulder to assisting a local artist in a performance art/puppet piece in area neighborhoods.
We are excited and motivated to make a difference with our art in our school and city. “GO ART!”

Samantha Travis was a volunteer docent in my studio for an event called Open Studios in Boulder, Colorado.
There are 120 studios open to the public during the event and this is the 20th year it has been offered to the community.
We had 100 visitors the weekend that she volunteered.
Samantha was quick to understand the abstract concepts I am working with in my paintings.
She was an articulate and courteous assistant as she explained concepts and installations.
Samantha communicates well and is enthusiastic about art and creativity.
I thoroughly enjoyed having her as an assistant in my studio. Susan Albers

JOHN HALE GOES TO NEW YORK AND CARNEGIE HALL TO RECEIVE HIS SCHOLASTICS NATIONAL AWARDS! Read on to hear of his experience and see a picture of his parents and him out front of Big Pink where Bob Dylan and the Band made music!
"I won a national silver metal for a portfolio as well as a gold medal for one individual piece. I was able to go and attend the Carnegie Hall awards ceremony in NYC. The entire experience was a blast. Next year I plan on attending the Art Institute of Chicago where I hope to further my skills in image making and other fields that catch my interest.
The ceremony itself was great and included a surprise visit from the one and only, Whoopi Goldberg, which was probably my favorite part along with getting to meet many of the other great artists who were being awarded. Once the awards were over, the students were invited back to my hotel(the Roosevelt) for an after party celebration where everyone got to mingle and get to know one another better. I made some friends and met a few people who will be going to the Art Institute in the fall so it’s good to be going with a few familiar faces.
My family and I also visited the MOMA and the Guggenheim, which were both great things to experience. My oldest brother who lives around the NYC area, and who we were able to visit with over the course of the trip, took us around to see the sights and to visit some of the smaller galleries. All in all, the trip was really great and I can’t thank your foundation enough for helping me get out there with all the other amazing young artists! " Sincerely, John Hale

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Boulder Daily Camera 2/15/2015
Martin Selby, 18-year-old senior at Boulder High School
Martin Selby is an accomplished pottery student. His work is based on throwing functional pieces on the wheel. He has a commitment to craftsmanship and is interested in innovative ideas for function. In his last year, Martin has worked on creating sets of pieces on the potters wheel. This repetition requires a discipline that functional potters need to produce a body of good pots. Martin respects pottery’s long history, admires and understands contemporary clay art and techniques. In addition to his work in the Pottery Studio, Martin is known for his abilities as a wrestler for Boulder High. Martin is Boulder High’s wrestling team captain and was a 2014 state quarterfinalist. Martin also is an accomplished musician. He was a member of the Boulder High Wind Ensemble and often plays music jobs in western Kansas.
How did you get into pottery?
I got into pottery the second semester of my freshman year when I had space in my schedule for an arts class. I immediately found that I loved working with clay due to its nature of being a very tactile art form.
What do you like about pottery as a medium?
What I love about pottery as a medium is that it is an art form in which I can be creative and use my body some at the same time. Whether it is wedging clay or throwing on the wheel I get to move around more than I would drawing and painting. I also enjoy how much of an emphasis there is for detail, texture and well-balanced form in pottery. I can actually make good use of my work at home. I have made much of my family’s current dinnerware.
What instruments do you play?
I play guitar as well as saxophone. I also used to play some cello and bass guitar and I mess around with drums some. I do sing as well, but I generally don’t mention it as much to reduce the chance of people trying to make me randomly sing for them.
What are your college plans?
I am currently considering going to school in Colorado, New Mexico or Hawaii to study ceramic arts, medicine or botany.
What’s your dream job?
My dream job at the moment would most likely involve being a doctor who also worked to incorporate herbal medicine and other forms of healing in my practice.

Annual "Teach What you Know" workshop - BHS advanced Pottery students make their way to Manhattan Middle School to assist in teaching a pottery workshop on throwing and hand building, with a morning workshop/tour at teacher Kate Villarreal's house. "I think the field trip was a great learning experience. It was helpful for me to figure out how to teach and also how to learn better. I realized that teaching is not as easy as it seems especially when people don't listen. It helped me learn how to teach better which is good beacuase I actually want to be a teacher when I grow up. This helped me learn and improve my pottery skills. I'm glad I got the chance to have this experience."~Emma

2011 ALUMNI, TOMAS HERNANDO KOFMAN
Here's a small update on my life and work. I've just finished my three month summer internship with Michael DeLucia as well as my own extended art project in New York City, and the experience was full of challenges and successes. Over the course of the summer I began exploring new media and new interactive formats as means to philosophical discourse. I also made a lot of art that fell flat, and am currently working to incorporate the results of this summer into a next phase of experimentation.
A drawing I made of Kara Walker's sugar sculpture A Subtlety was tweeted by Creative Time. I made the drawing from the molasses that dripped down the walls of the now defunct Domino factory that housed the monolithic sphinx - the smell was so sweet that it was like vomit. I thought the piece had many layers of meaning, and it was really exciting to feel a small part of the art world.
Coming into the summer I was honored as a recipient of one of two RISD Parent's Council Fine Arts Internship awards. Additionally, as a part of my internship I was given a large private studio space in the back of Michael's studio. Thanks to the support of this generous grant and the gift of a dedicated place for experiment and invention, I was able to have the time and resources to pursue my research, and over the course of the summer I spent my weekends and evenings building a very involved piece that focused around a painting that is radically different every time it's seen. It was really fulfilling to bring my ideas to life.
The final piece, titled "Journeyspace: Five Dogs on a Mountain" involved many elements from sculpture to painting to construction to lighting; over the course of this project, I worked with a performer as well as my close friends Timothy McNeish the photographer and Valantyn Koziak the roboticist to arrive at the final product. I managed my costs, set my own schedules, learned necessary skills and had the wonderful experience of holding an opening and receiving public feedback. I was honored to be told that the piece was moving, and that it touched something deep and true.
I am so deeply grateful to the donors who made this work possible, their support gave me an experience I couldn't have dreamed of otherwise. I also want to thank David Scanavino, Gregory Victory, Timothy McNeish, Bayard Morse, Michael DeLucia, Alex Kuzio, Sarah Caggiano, Ro Behmer and my mom and dad.
I am back on campus now and beginning my junior year in the painting department. I'll be posting new artwork everyday at https://paintaday.jux.com as I continue to explore the journeyspace medium and become a better painter. Best, Tomás

PARENT AND COVA MEMBER QUOTE: "I am so impressed with the dedication and enthusiasm displayed by the Boulder art teachers! It's remarkable how much they are willing to give of themselves to their students and obvious that any time or effort spent by a student will be equaled by their teachers. Senior Max Boice stands before his portion of the 15th street project just north and in front of Boulder High School. Max writes about his experience working on this project below:
My name is Max Boice and this project all started my freshman year. I had decided to include a pottery class into my schedule having always wanted to learn to make something on a potter’s wheel. My art teacher, Ms. Villarreal, was an extremely encouraging and kept telling us, “The sky’s the limit!” Towards the end of the class, as we were packing up our clay projects, she announced that a very interesting opportunity had arisen and that it was the opportunity to get involved with the city that we lived in. The City of Boulder was going to start a project to re-design 15th street and make it more visually appealing, and they wanted local Boulder High art students to GET INVOLVED!!! It was an excellent opportunity that I could not miss. I thought that it would be so cool if my children grew up in Boulder and saw that my artwork was STILL THERE!” It was exciting to think about, so of course, after class I said, “Ms. V., I would like to get involved.” The following week she organized a brain storming session with about twenty kids who wanted to get involved at the time. We all met in the back room of Twirl, on 15th street and we bounced our ideas off of each other. After the session, we went home and began to dream up what these projects would look like. Before presenting our ideas to the City of Boulder, we worked on chiseling our ideas down to a basic mold that could easily be changed to fit their budget, spacing, and safety concerns. Later, we presented our ideas in front of architects, city planners, and property owners. That meeting occurred a few months after our initial brain storming session, and by that time, there were only two students left, me and a senior named Isaac Dolores. Everybody at the City of Boulder meeting thought our ideas would be great to put in to the project and were all very supportive of what we had to offer. From then on, I would meet with Ms. Villarreal and she was in direct contact with Carol Adams, http://www.studioterra.net/principal.html the head of 15th street project. Together, we altered my project constantly, adjusting it to ever changing requirements. Isaac met with an expert welder to assist him on is metal work project. The process of getting our ideas visualized progressed very slowly with the City of Boulder making sure that there were no loose ends in the project. In the end though, it was all worth it. I cannot thank the City of Boulder enough for letting us become involved in a city project. I absolutely enjoyed all the real world experience. My “prints” were imbedded into the sidewalk at 15th street and Arapahoe at the end of the 2014 summer and now Boulder High panthers walk among them as they make their commute to school every day. |

Boulder High Teacher Virginia Schick named 2014 High School Art Educator of the Year
Plastered across the walls of Virginia Schick’s Boulder High School classroom walls and on their webpage are the words, “The highest purpose of art is to inspire" (penned by musician/poet Bob Dylan). Virginia has dedicated the art of her teaching to inspire her students to succeed and to be the best that they can be.
Virginia’s passion, impeccable work ethic and dedication to the art education profession have not gone unnoticed. Among her many accolades are the Marie Walsh Sharpe Teacher as Artist Award, the Jared Polis Award and the Impact on Education for Excellence Winner in teaching visual art. In addition, Virginia became nationally recognized as a Board Certified Teacher in 2008. She now serves as the BVSD facilitator of National Board Certification, assisting in the National Certification of 23 other Boulder Valley teachers in the past year. Additionally, Virginia serves as her district’s Induction Coach for new art educators and is the Teacher Leader 6-12 for district art teachers. As impressive as her list of personal accolades, her students are equally so. Under her tutelage, her students have received local, national and international recognitions, including multiple Colorado and National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Gold and Silver Key winners, selection for inclusion in the National Congressional Art Show in Washington, D.C., and selection for showings by the Colorado State Board of Education.
However, it is not the accolades that drive Virginia to teach but her desire to inspire. According to Pamela Starck, Colorado Scholastics Art and Writing Coordinator, Virginia has the rare talent to create “magic” within the walls of her classroom, all the while equipping her students with the skills, creativity and personal voice needed to succeed as an artist. Equally impressive to Pam is the way in which her students respond to her high standards. Virginia demands 120 percent of herself and requests the same of her students. Her students respond by returning the same.
“Virginia regularly stretches the traditional boundaries of teaching, because she does not see the school walls as limiting factors," said Michelle Carpenter, teacher of AP Spanish and the Adelante! Program at Boulder High. "Virginia truly makes our school and district a better place to live, work and develop into lifelong artists.”
Schick’s passion is to inspire both the serious and casual art students alike. Virginia established a Portfolio 101 class for all students within the Boulder Valley School District, not only for those entertaining the idea of a future in the arts through higher education. She also established AP Studio Art and Art History classes for Boulder High by attending the AP training of her own initiative. Additionally, every week after school, Virginia offers “Open Studio” hours to students who were either unable to fit visual art classes into their schedules or simply are desirous of more studio time after the regular school day has ended.
In her desire to inspire each and every student, Virginia has also used art to reach out to struggling and at risk students. Upon realizing the lack of diversity amongst registered visual art students at Boulder High, Virginia immediately sought a solution by translating all course offerings and connecting personally with diverse populations, sometimes even conducting home visits. Her efforts resulted in a 20 percent increase in the enrollment of diverse student populations. In addition, Virginia has used art to help struggling students turn around their grades.
“There are many proficient and dedicated teachers in education," Pam Starck said. "There are also teachers who, because of their commitment to education and students are considered outstanding. Virginia is outstanding, and it is without hesitation I recommend her for High School Teacher of the year.”
