STUDENT SPOTLIGHT Boulder Daily Camera 2/15/2015
Martin Selby, 18-year-old senior at Boulder High School
Martin Selby is an accomplished pottery student. His work is based on throwing functional pieces on the wheel. He has a commitment to craftsmanship and is interested in innovative ideas for function. In his last year, Martin has worked on creating sets of pieces on the potters wheel. This repetition requires a discipline that functional potters need to produce a body of good pots. Martin respects pottery’s long history, admires and understands contemporary clay art and techniques. In addition to his work in the Pottery Studio, Martin is known for his abilities as a wrestler for Boulder High. Martin is Boulder High’s wrestling team captain and was a 2014 state quarterfinalist. Martin also is an accomplished musician. He was a member of the Boulder High Wind Ensemble and often plays music jobs in western Kansas.
How did you get into pottery?
I got into pottery the second semester of my freshman year when I had space in my schedule for an arts class. I immediately found that I loved working with clay due to its nature of being a very tactile art form.
What do you like about pottery as a medium?
What I love about pottery as a medium is that it is an art form in which I can be creative and use my body some at the same time. Whether it is wedging clay or throwing on the wheel I get to move around more than I would drawing and painting. I also enjoy how much of an emphasis there is for detail, texture and well-balanced form in pottery. I can actually make good use of my work at home. I have made much of my family’s current dinnerware.
What instruments do you play?
I play guitar as well as saxophone. I also used to play some cello and bass guitar and I mess around with drums some. I do sing as well, but I generally don’t mention it as much to reduce the chance of people trying to make me randomly sing for them.
What are your college plans?
I am currently considering going to school in Colorado, New Mexico or Hawaii to study ceramic arts, medicine or botany.
What’s your dream job?
My dream job at the moment would most likely involve being a doctor who also worked to incorporate herbal medicine and other forms of healing in my practice.
